Wind-Down Rituals: The Sleep-Hormone Connection

ree

You’ve probably noticed that sleep changes during midlife. Maybe you wake at 3 a.m., can’t fall back asleep, or feel wired at bedtime even when you’re exhausted. It’s not just in your head—fluctuating hormones influence your sleep cycles and stress response.

When you don’t get enough quality rest, your body produces more cortisol, the stress hormone that can increase cravings and make belly fat more stubborn. Sleep loss also throws off hunger hormones—raising ghrelin (which makes you hungry) and lowering leptin (which signals fullness). Over time, this can affect your mood, metabolism, and recovery from workouts.

A solution that works for many women: create an intentional wind-down routine that tells your body it’s safe to relax. Dimming lights, turning off screens, and switching from stimulation to calm activities—like stretching, reading, or sipping herbal tea—help your nervous system shift from “go-mode” to “restore-mode.”

Aim for 30 minutes of true downtime before bed. If your mind races, try slow breathing: inhale for 4 counts, exhale for 6. Even small improvements in your bedtime routine can help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and wake up with more consistent energy.

Good sleep doesn’t just make you feel better tomorrow—it helps balance your hormones today.
